When does GTA 6 preload start?

Rockstar says players who pre-order the digital version can start pre-loading on Thursday, November 12, 2026, exactly one week before GTA 6 launches on November 19. That applies to both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar gave a date, not a time. Several store listings and guides report that preload opens at midnight local time, the same way the game itself unlocks, but treat that as likely rather than official. If it isn't available when you check on November 12, check again later that day.

How much space you need

Rockstar hasn't published an official file size yet, and the store listings don't show one. Estimates from fans and outlets range from about 150 GB to 250 GB. GTA 5 takes around 95 GB on current consoles, and GTA 6 is a far bigger game.

How to preload GTA 6 on PS5

  1. Pre-order the digital edition on PlayStation Store.
  2. Go to Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download.
  3. Go to Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  4. Leave the PS5 in rest mode from November 12. The download should start on its own.
  5. If it doesn't, open your Game Library → Your Collection, find Grand Theft Auto VI and start the download manually.

How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Pre-order the digital edition on Microsoft Store.
  2. Make sure your console is set to keep games up to date and uses the Sleep power mode, so it can download while you're away.
  3. From November 12, open My games & apps → Full library, find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Install.
  4. You can also start the install remotely from the Xbox app on your phone.

On Xbox Series S, storage is tight. The 512 GB model has much less free space once the system reserve is taken out, so you may need to uninstall other games first.

Can you preload a physical copy?

Pre-loading is for digital pre-orders. If you're buying a physical copy, you'll install from the disc or code once you have it, and download any update after that. If being able to play at unlock time matters to you, go digital.
