Is GTA 6 Down? Server Status and Launch Fixes

Launch nights are rough for big games. Here's how to tell whether it's the servers or your console, and what actually fixes it.

Is GTA 6 down? Check these first

If GTA 6 won't connect, download or start, first work out whether the problem is on Rockstar's side, your platform's side, or your own connection. These are the official status pages:

If every status page is green but you still can't connect, the problem is most likely your console or network. Work through the fixes below.

Good to know

Rockstar has called GTA 6 a single-player experience, but it hasn't detailed whether the story needs an internet connection. If the story starts fine and only online features fail, it's probably a server issue, not your setup.

GTA 6 won't start or still says locked

GTA 6 unlocks at midnight local time on November 19, according to PlayStation Store listings. US players unlock at midnight Eastern, which is 9 PM Pacific on November 18. If you're early, the game will refuse to launch even if it's fully installed. Check Is GTA 6 out yet? for your exact time.

  • Make sure your console's date, time and time zone are set to automatic.
  • Sign in to the same account you pre-ordered with. Digital licences are tied to it.
  • On PS5, if the game shows as locked after the unlock time, go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licences.
  • On Xbox, set the console as your Home Xbox (Settings → General → Personalization) so the licence works offline too.

GTA 6 download stuck or slow

With millions of people downloading at once, launch-day download servers slow down. A queued or stuck download is usually the platform, not you. Try these in order:

  1. Pause and resume the download from the Downloads list (PS5) or the Manage queue (Xbox).
  2. Restart the console fully, not into rest mode. On Xbox, hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  3. Use a wired connection if you can, and stop other devices from streaming while you download.
  4. Download in rest/sleep mode overnight. PS5 rest mode needs "Stay Connected to the Internet" turned on.
  5. Pre-load early next time. If you pre-ordered digitally, pre-loading opens November 12. See the preload guide.

Not enough storage

Rockstar hasn't published an official size, and a day-one patch can add more. Plan for 200 GB or more. On Xbox Series S and the 825 GB PS5, you'll likely need to uninstall other games first. Full details are in the GTA 6 download size guide.

GTA 6 crashing or freezing

  • Install the latest update. Launch-day patches often fix early crashes.
  • Update your console's system software.
  • PS5: boot into Safe Mode (hold power until the second beep) and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  • Xbox: do a full power cycle by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then unplugging for a minute.
  • Give the console room to breathe. Overheating in an enclosed cabinet causes freezes.

If you get a specific error code after launch, check Rockstar Support. We'll add real GTA 6 error codes here once players start reporting them.
